The Cabo de Gata-N\u00edjar Natural Park stretches along both sides of a spit of land. The nature in this area is of volcanic origin and is extremely rugged, but with cliffs, bays, rock formations, dry river beds and salt pans. A good start to visit the 45,000 hectare park is the visitor centre in Retamar.<\/p>\n
A little further on, near the fishing village of San Miguel, the first attraction offers itself, the lagoons of Las Salinas de Cabo de Gata, a breeding ground of flamingos and many other bird species. From there a road full of hairpin bends leads to the cape lighthouse, with the spectacular reef of mermaids rising out of the water like a pointed rock.<\/p>\n
From the promontory, the park’s coastline runs another 40 km north. The old fishing village of San Jos\u00e9, built against a steep rock, is now a paradise for water sports enthusiasts.<\/p>\n
Before you reach San Jos\u00e9, you come along a dirt road that leads to one of the most beautiful spots in the natural park, the beaches of Playa de los Genoveses and Playa M\u00f3nsul, with impressive dunes and large rocks in all shapes and sizes. Het natuurpark Cabo de Gata-N\u00edjar strekt zich uit langs beide zijden van een landtong. De natuur in dit gebied is van vulkanische oorsprong en is uiterst ruig, maar met kliffen, baaien, rotsformaties, droge rivierbeddingen en zoutpannen. Een goede start om het park van 45.000 hectare te bezoeken, is het bezoekerscentrum in Retamar.<\/p>
Even verderop bij het vissersdorpje San Miguel biedt zich al de eerste attractie aan, de lagunes van Las Salinas de Cabo de Gata, een broedplaats van flamingo's en vele andere vogelsoorten. Vandaar gaat een weg vol haarspeldbochten naar de vuurtoren van de kaap, met de spectaculaire rif der zeemeerminnen die als een puntige rots uit het water rijst.<\/p>
Vanaf de kaap loopt de kustlijn van het park nog 40 km noordwaarts. Het oude vissersdorpje San Jos\u00e9, tegen een steile rots opgebouwd, is nu een paradijs voor watersporters.<\/p>
Voor je San Jos\u00e9 bereikt, kom je langs een onverharde weg die naar een van de mooiste plekjes van het natuurpark leidt, de stranden van Playa de los Genoveses en Playa M\u00f3nsul, met indrukwekkende duinen en grote rotsen in allerlei vormen.
